Blaauwklippen Wine Estate Celebrates it's 325th Anniversary in 2007
Blaauwklippen is one of the oldest wineland properties in South Africa, and we want to pay homage to the past by celebrating our 325th Anniversary with a FARM FESTIVAL on 20 and 21 October from 10am.
Traditional Farm Products: Farm workers from ten neighbouring farms will share in our celebrations by exhibiting a collection of their home made goods. Some examples of these items are; Organic vegetables and eggs, home made baskets, bead work, traditional eats such as samoesas, koeksisters, ginger beer, preserves, olives, honey, etc. For the Wine Lover: Our Wine Center will offer tastings of our world class wines, including our special releases to commemorate our 325th birthday. For the History Buff: There will be an exhibition, compiled by Hennie Vos, of maps, deeds and artifacts from the Estate for the past 325 years. The exhibition wil also include laminated pictures in monochrome of the town, dating back 100 years. For the Whole Family to Enjoy: Carriage and pony rides through the vineyards, Face paining, special heritage menu at the restaurant, a traditional farm worker band, tractor rides, an art exhibition by local artist Frans Groenewald.
Blaauwklippen is one of the Western Cape wine region's oldest and most respected wine farms as well as being one of the friendliest. It's only about forty minutes drive from the centre of Cape Town and is a wonderful day out. Come and taste, relax and enjoy. More...
The Estate
The estate is breathtakingly beautiful – with a spectacular mountain backdrop, wide green spaces and elegant Cape Dutch buildings. It produces some of South Africa's most highly regarded wines but it has plenty of other things to experience. In 2005 it opened a new tasting centre aimed at encouraging people to explore and take pleasure in wine and not feel they have to be experts to do so. In keeping with the relaxed, casual atmosphere, visitors can take their wine outside and enjoy it on the veranda or lawn. There is also a children's play area.
Wine
Blaauwklippen Vineyards portfolio comprises three collections: the premium BVS range; the Blaauwklippen range and; the easy drinking Landau range.
Dining
Blaauwklippen also prides itself on its food. You can enjoy traditional South African and European-style cuisine at the Barouche Restaurant where everything is prepared using fresh, mainly organic, ingredients. (There is also a delicious children's menu).
Tours
You can take cellar tours or have a look at the estate's collection of carriages and vintage cars in the museum. You can even take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the vineyards.
Special occasions
Its country charm and beauty also make the estate popular for weddings and other special events, with the lawn in front of the 18th century Manor House an ideal venue for group functions and outside lunches. The historic Manor House itself is available for private dinner events and also small conferences. It can accommodate 60 guests at a banquet and also offers two breakaway rooms able to seat between 15 and 30 delegates.
" Somedays, early in the morning, when the rain has been heavy overnight, the granite rocks about the estate shine quite blue. Three centuries ago this farm was named for these blue rocks. It's nice to still have them around; they're just another reminder of our powerful heritage – one we're very proud of - the delicate terroir, the 17th century Manor House, the old, deep seated vine roots and, most importantly, the generations of people who've built this farm on hard work and good faith. Welcome to Blaauwklippen, I think you will enjoy it here."
Rolf Zeitvogel, wine maker and estate manager. Tastings daily from 9am – 5pm (4pm on Sundays) and daily cellar tours by appointment. For bookings and other information call 021 880 0133 or mail hospitality@blaauwklippen.co.za
